Work Types

Purpose

When a member spends time on a task, the member enters a time record in the PSA with information about how that time is spent. Work Type is one of the fields that helps define the type of work that is done. The work can be for a client (External) or for the MSP company (Internal).

MSPCFO assigns classifications to work types based on the type of client, internal or external, and the work type in the PSA.

Here are the definitions of the work type options:

Admin- Time that is non-billable.

Client- Time billable to a client.

Exclude- Time to be excluded from reports

Internal Technical- Technical time spent by an engineer on work done for the MSP (your internal client).
Since there is no actual revenue for work done for the MSP,  revenue credit to the engineer is assigned using a % of the rate the engineer would have made if doing client-facing work. The default % is 50% of the engineer rate. This can be changed in Lookup/Options/Time Logs/Internal Technical Revenue Credit = x%

Sales- Time spent for selling. There is no productivity credit.

Why is the work type option "Internal Technical" important?

Members who perform technical work for the MSP are doing important work which may be technical work on a product that impacts many of your clients, technical work that makes your company more efficient, etc. You should incent the members to do this type of work even though it is not directly client-facing or revenue producing. If Internal Technical is not assigned, the member will receive no attributed revenue credit for the work done.
